Physicians experience trauma in training and later through the practice of medicine. Many are left to deal with the after effects of this trauma all on their own. Afraid of punitive educational institutions, healthcare systems, medical boards and PHPs they often isolate. Untreated depression, anxiety and PTSD can be life threatening. Video 2-- Trauma and the Role of Hypervigilance
The pattern of hypervigilance begins in trauma. We want to avoid repeating painful patterns. We often blame ourselves for the trauma perpetrated upon us. If only we had been more careful/vigilant, we wouldn’t find ourselves in this compromised situation. We struggle to save our careers, our marriages, our friendships, and the vigilance increases. Sustaining this habituated state is impossible, yet we don’t know what else to do. NEW proactive actions will eliminate the need for hypervigilance, restoring your natural confidence.
Video 3-- Trauma’s Role in Depression
For those of us with trauma histories, depression is often an outgrowth of the long-term stress, trauma and PTSD we experience. Four types of depression are: atypical, anxious, melancholic and psychotic. 1/3 of our veterans plagued by PTSD also suffer with depression. The good news is that therapy is even more effective when PTSD and depression co-exist.
Video 4-- Trauma and Anxiety
Fear is a gift. It protects us by signaling when we are in danger. It is designed to be a short-lived, situation, however. When we remain in a persistent prolonged state of fear it no longer is protective. Long term fear fuels chronic anxiety, chronic health conditions and depletes us mentally and emotionally.
Video 5-- Trauma and Complex PTSD
Continuous exposure to trauma over time can lead to complex PTSD. It fuels hypervigilance, overwhelm, depression and keeps you constantly on edge. Long-term engagement with traumatic events in a medical center, verbal abuse from peers, bullying from administrators, technology challenges with EMRs, the pressure of production (RVUs), responsibilities at home…when you add this all together your risk of developing PTSD or complex PTSD is significant. You can mitigate this risk by taking action today.
Video 6-- Trauma and Daily Triggers
High levels of daily stress and vicarious trauma in the practice of medicine increases the risk of developing PTSD. The PTSD cycle begins when intrusive thoughts, flooding of emotion or flashback are triggered. This triggering can be physical, emotional, sensory or relational. Thankfully, we can interrupt and disrupt this cycle.
Video 7-- Trauma and Feeling Stuck
This video addresses the ways trauma disempowers us, erodes our self-confidence and distorts our beliefs. We lose faith in ourselves , blaming ourselves for the way we have adapted to our circumstances. PTSD results in a fight or flight or freeze response. When we become habituated in a “freeze” adaptive state we feel confused and stuck. “Stuck” is fueled by fear, avoidance, habituated destructive patterns and resistance. When we choose different fuel, our inertia resolves. Hope is restored as we begin to move forward applying new strategies.

This video focuses on our need for boundaries. Our trauma histories create a more urgent need for healthy boundaries. Because we are also struggling with anxiety, PTSD triggers and depression, we need a buffer of protection. GOOD boundaries provide this buffer. How? It starts with how we communicate. Explore the five communication styles of assertiveness, aggressiveness, passive/aggressiveness, submissiveness and manipulation. When we communicate effectively and confidently, we can begin the process of setting healthy boundaries, boundaries that keep us all safe.
